Sound Sensations

The Sound Sensations Gallery gives visitors of all ages and abilities opportunities to engage in hands-on activities to create music, while understanding the fundamentals of sound. Future scientists and musicians will explore by using real instruments from around the world, unusual or unexpected sound-making devices, plus scientific and digital tools to visualize sound waves and sense vibrations.

How Adults can Support discovery, Creativity, Exploration, and Play in Sound Sensations 

  • Try making a song together! Music is a great way for children to express themselves.

  • Engage by showing them the different instruments and modeling different ways to use them.

  • Talk about all the different ways that you can make music and sound!

  • Sound is exciting! Here are some fast facts!

    • Sound travels faster in water than in air

    • Dogs can hear at a higher frequency than humans, allowing them to hear sounds that we cannot!

    • The bigger the ears the better it can hear.

    • Flies can’t hear at all!

    • Wind doesn’t make a sound until it blows against an obstacle.

    • The loudest natural sound on Earth is a volcano erupting!
