March is a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women throughout history. Women's History Month is not just about looking back; it’s about appreciating the trailblazers who paved the way and the women today who continue to shape our world.
Throughout the month of March, our Creativity Studios has been featuring influential female artists who have used art as a means of expression, activism, and storytelling. Read a little bit about each of them below.
Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954)
Frida was a groundbreaking Mexican artist known for her surreal and personal works, as well as her many self portraits. She once said, "I paint self-portraits because I am often alone, and because I am the person I know best." She was most influenced by her native Mexican culture, and used lots of bright colors in her works. Her work continues to inspire discussions on feminism, disability, and self-expression.
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887 - 1986)
Georgia was an American Modernist artist most known for her large-scale impressions of flowers and plants, as well as desert landscapes. She was greatly inspired by natural forms that were observed up close. Often called the "Mother of American Modernism," she broke barriers for women in the art world and redefined how nature and emotion could be represented in visual art.
Joan Mitchell (1925 - 1992)
Joan was a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism, known for her vibrant, gestural brushwork and emotionally charged compositions. Her work, inspired by poetry and landscapes, challenged the male-dominated art movement and solidified her place as one of the most influential painters of the 20th century.
Yayoi Kusama (Born 1929)
Yayoi is a Japanese contemporary artist renowned for her immersive installations, polka dot motifs, and infinity mirror rooms. A pioneer of conceptual and performance art, she has transformed themes of mental health, obsession, and repetition into visually stunning and thought-provoking works that captivate audiences worldwide.
