Light Lab
In our Light Lab Gallery, whether using a prism to break white light into a beautiful spectrum, bending and twisting light rays to better understand concepts like reflection and refraction, or exploring the breathtaking interaction of light energy and magnetism to create their own aurora display, visitors of all ages and abilities are able to delight in an authentic STEAM experience through the beauty and science of light
Pools of light and color welcome young scientists and their families into a dimly-lit, slightly mysterious exhibit gallery.
How adults Can support Discovery, Creativity, Exploration, and play in Light Lab
-
Talk about where you can spot each color of the rainbow in the room!
-
Use their artwork on the LiteBrite to start conversations about prior experiences or interests! What they are creating can express a lot!
-
Discuss how the room makes them feel. Is the dark calming or scary? Are the lights bright or dim? What does each color make you feel?
-
Light is so cool! Here are some fast facts:
-
Light is made up of all the colors mixed together! (You can play with this fact using the prisms!)
-
Light is a beam of energy! It travels in wavelengths and is the only kind of energy that we can actually see with our eyes.
-
Insects and some other animals can see more than we can which means there are colors that we can’t even begin to imagine! (What would you name a new color?)
-
If you traveled at the speed of light, you could travel around the earth 7.5 times every second!
-
The Northern Lights are caused by energy from the sum interacting with gases surrounding the Earth.
-
You can see lightning before you hear thunder because light travels faster than sound! Thunder is the sound of lightning hitting the Earth.
